Our Philosophy

Holistic Dentistry for Functional Health

Holistic health focuses on physical, mental, and emotional needs. Functional care allows for individualized treatments to address the underlying causes of an illness or symptoms and optimizes  outcomes for longevity.

As a holistic and functional dental care team, we take a comprehensive approach to oral health, focusing not only on the teeth and gums but also on the overall health and well-being of our patients. This type of dentistry views the mouth as an integral part of the entire body, recognizing that dental issues can affect and be effected by overall health. In our practice, we emphasize prevention, proper diagnostics,  the use of non-toxic materials, and the interrelationship between oral health and the rest of the body.

Key components of our approach that some patients find to be different from their "traditional dentist" visit include but are not limited to:

Whole-Body Approach:
  • We take notice of our patients' health well beyond what's inside their mouth. Because of the interrelationship of all bodily systems, it is important to discover the root cause of issues and develop a cohesive plan that supports a patient's whole body health. Because when done correctly, a patient with a healthy smile should likely also have healthy skin, healthy bones and muscles, healthy organs, and a healthy mind.  To facilitate this approach, we spend more time reviewing a detailed history; we collaborate with other experts to ensure you are properly supported in your health journey; and we advise on nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle modifications.

  • Traditional Dentists: They primarily focus on diagnosing and treating dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay, often without considering the broader health context.

Materials and Methods:
  • We use biocompatible, non-toxic materials for dental work, avoiding substances like mercury amalgam fillings. We employ hydroxyapatite both in the clinic and at home, and we recommend treatment methods such as safe mercury amalgam removal treatment, ozone therapy, and herbal remedies.

  • Traditional Dentists: They commonly use conventional materials and methods, including amalgam fillings, fluoride treatments, and standard pharmaceuticals.

Preventive Care:
  • We emphasize prevention through education about nutrition, sleep, breathing, hydration, supplementation, oral hygiene, and lifestyle habits that support dental and overall health.

  • Traditional Dentists: While prevention is also important, the focus is more on regular cleanings, check-ups, and the use of fluoride.

Treatment Philosophy:
  • As often as possible, we use a minimally invasive approach, aiming to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible. We also integrate other health practices and work alongside other healthcare providers to ensure a coordinated approach to health. These other providers include functional medicine practitioners, nutritionists, naturopaths, myofunctional  and speech therapists, chiropractors, otorhinolaryngologists, psychiatrists, among others.

  • Traditional Dentists: The treatment approach may be more interventionist or "sick care"-centric, involving procedures like drilling and filling cavities, root canals, and extractions when necessary and giving the patient little insight into how their dental health may relate to other chronic conditions from which they suffer.

Patient-Centered Care:
  • We focus on creating a personalized treatment plan that considers the patient’s unique health history, needs, and goals. We often spend more time with each patient to understand their overall health and wellness.

  • Traditional Dentists: The care is often standardized, with a primary focus on treating specific dental issues rather than a holistic assessment of the patient’s health.

By choosing a holistic and functional dentist, patients can expect a dental care approach that looks beyond the immediate dental problem to consider long-term health and wellness. This approach is especially beneficial for those who are sensitive to conventional dental materials or who prefer natural and integrative health practices.
